Ignoring the man in the corner for a moment, he looks over at their Corporal.

"We'll never find him in this."

He waves an arm at the window.

"Fog's too thick."

Blinking and scowling, he eased over to the door and, still keeping watch down the hallway, eased his head back into the opening and said.

"Somebody tell me what's going on?"

"I'm not sure he survived the fall. But even if he did, what can he tell someone. He seemed positively mad."

He turned to Phil.

"He jumped out the damned window."

He looked around at the others in the room then moved to the man who was bleeding.

"Lie down man. Someone get the medic up here." he said in Phil's direction.

He applied pressure to the wound.

"Any idea what set him off?"

“Medic!” shouts Corporal Slade as he grabs the gun from the floor “get one here now!

He looks over to Millbrook with a deep frown

“Dammit we have to at least try - go find some rope and torches I want that lunatic found before he does any more damage”

Morley is assisting the injured orderly on the floor. The wound looks nasty multiple stabs to the same area, a genuine frenzied attack with something long and sharp.

“Dunno” gasps the injured orderly in reply to Morley “ he was morphine’d up and out cold in the cot when I left. I came back about 10 minutes later to treat the others and he was standing in front of that picture - just staring at it. I spoke to him and he just went berserk and ....”

Almost immediately there are sounds of a second commotion downstairs

“To arms!” yelps a voice from the bottom of the stairs and then in a slightly more muffled tone as if being called from just outside “stand and be identified! Friend or foe?!”

“Now what?” growls Slade “you stay here until the orderly gets here (he points to Morley), you two (he points at Summers and Millbrook) bring those Lee-Enfield's and come with me. And make sure they are loaded."

"Yes Corporal."

And as Slade turns away, he shrugs helplessly at Aaron, not the best idea to split up but not much choice. His eyes and head nod towards the picture that the orderly pointed out. Aaron would have the opportunity to check it out, assuming he picks up on it.

"Come on Summers."

He follows Slade from the room.

Scowling, he gave his eyes another quick rub and readied his rifle.

"Lead on, Macduff."

He waited with the orderly until another medic showed up. He'd keep pressure on the wound if that's what was needed.

"Any idea why he was so interested in that painting? Let me guess, he swore it was watching him?" he said scoffingly out loud, but wondering if that's exactly what the guy thought. He'd definitely check it out once the other orderly came to take care of this guy.

The group heading downstairs passes a lone medic heading up in the opposite direction. Slade shouts out the direction and room number as he passes but doesn’t slow until he reaches the bottom of the Stairs.

Downstairs

The main front door surrounded up to ¾ of its normal height by a sandbag dog leg wall is open. Two of the uninjured Tommie’s , sentries to that entrance are busy grabbing .303 ammunition from an open box on the interior side of the sandbag wall. Their haste is such that rounds are being shoved into pockets rather than clipped up in an orderly fashion. A third man, just past the open door is bobbing up and down in front of the secondary exterior sandbag wall on the outside of the door. Thick soupy fog rolls in round the frame of the door and seems to persistently stick to the nearby floor like so much spilt milk.

“Whats going on here?”
Slade sternly asks

“Got people outside, at least 12 that I can see headin’ our way” answers one of the soldiers in flurry of motion “they aint saying the password or anything else for that matter. Recon it’s a Jerry sneak attack”

Slade frowns

“Walking towards us? That doesn’t sound right.”

He glances over at Millbook and Summers as he picks up a spare rifle resting against the inner sandbag wall

“Time to earn your pay lads. Get on that firing point outside the door and pop a round or two over the heads of whatever you see. If they don’t heel too - you know what comes next. No one gets past otherwise.”

He snaps a clip into his rifle with a slight smile

“We’ve had worse than this – don’t worry, just look out for eachother”

Upstairs

The orderly skids to a stop outside the door pulling a large kaki green bag from his side. Getting an immediate first impression from what Morley was doing he begins to unpack basic gauze and cotton padding to put over the wound. He glances over at the missing window and back to his casualty.

“What the hell happened, someone get thrown out the window?” he grunts as he sets to work

The injured man lets out a yelp as the orderly treating him unceremoniously begins to pack the wounds as best he can then looks back at Morley as he asks his question

“He had shell shock, out cold and shot up with morphine” he answers “He shouldn't even be moving. His mind was gone – only he knows what he saw. He just kept hacking at the thing saying the same thing over and over, like a man possessed.”

.......The large free standing wardrobe in the far corner of the room wobbles slightly on its sturdy short legs

"With me."

He says quietly to Phil, thinking that sticking together is a good thing right now. He has no concerns about firing a warning shot, he'll deal with what happens after as he sees fit. He grabs a handful of ammo on his way past, keeping his head low until he finds a position behind the sandbag wall that offers a place of cover to shoot from.

Keeping as much of himself in cover as possible, he aims high and squeezes the trigger.

Following his friend's example, he grabbed ammo and stuffed it in his pockets and then kneeled beside Nic.

"What are we shooting at..." he started asking but then saw and followed Nic's example of shooting high.

"Yeah, lost it and jumped out the damned window."

Once the man was being taken care of by the medic, Aaron stood and looked at the now moving wardrobe.

He stepped up to it and pulled hard on one handle, stepping to the side.

One or two shots ring out from behind the sandbag wall and echo off into the mist.

The light from the windows of the house and the light now streaming out of the front door frames the outline of figures in the mist. At least 12 in number they spaced out and walking slowly towards the building from all directions on that side. Forms and movement behind suggest more follow in their wake.

Everything about them looks and feels wrong. Their advance is slow, no rush of attack no shouts or noises of any kind. Whilst clothing and other apparel including rifles and other “weapons” in their hands can be seen, the faces of the advancing force seems to be wrapped in shadow, unchanging in the diffuse light falling upon them. Slade points at a letterbox sized hole in the sandbag wall – a firing point that also allows a clear yet covered view outwards. He puts his fingers to his lips

“Slow advance – a sneak attack. Keep your voice down.”

He plonks a round heavy object in Summers hand and then does the same with Millbrook the object recognisable instantly by its pull pin and pineapple shape as a mills bomb (grenade)

“Only when I say” whispers Slade “let em get closer first!”

Upstairs

The wardrobe door creeks open. Its contents two faded suits of male clothing and coiled up at the back the figure of a made as naked as the day he was born. He looks back at you with large pale eyes and an open wide smile. In his hand a small knife, not a military kind but any you would normally find in a cutlery draw. Wood shavings on the floor of the wardrobe suggest he has been scraping or carving onto the wood somewhere inside.

“When the stars are right death is not always the barrier is seems” he giggles “the watcher in the mists is coming for all of us. Then we will all pray for death...”

He points the little knife in your direction

“Pray for me or pray for Death!!” he screams “you don’t belong here – go back!”

A volley of shots from nearby echoes through the open, broken window nearby.

He looks out at the figures think that he has suddenly arrived in a zombie movie. The whole creepy mist, slowly shambling figures, all were screaming out 'HORROR FILM'. Except this is no film.

He looks sidewards as Slade passes him a grenade, takes it and finds he is more than ready to use it. No way he wants those figures to get close!

The feel of the grenade would have identified it even if his sight hadn't mostly returned.

"Spooky lookin', ain't they," he whispered hoarsely to Nic as he prepared to pull the pin of the explosive device.

Because of his association of the figures with zombies he has no confidence that the grenade will do enough damage. Also, how effective were grenades back in the day? He agrees with Phil though.

"Zombies.."

He whispers, thinking that saying it might make it sound ridiculous and therefore better.. but neither works.

He takes a step back as he opens the door to the wardrobe.

*He's completely mad.* he thinks as the man spouts off about nonsense.

He's prepared in case the man comes at him. He doesn't want to hurt him, but he wants him subdued.

Before he can say anything, shots are heard outside and he wonders if the Germans are approaching. He turns his attention back to the immediate problem.

"Come on out of there man. We can help you." he said, not expecting his words to have any effect whatsoever on the madman.

One thing for sure is he isn't going to let him get near any of the wounded.

The shots did nothing to deter the steady pace of the figures. As the diffuse fog filled light slowly crept over them it was clear why they were not rushing towards the building.

There were soldiers of course, or what was left of them with bodies twisted and butchered by all aspects of war yet there were others with them who were clearly not soldiers - women, children & men wearing very ordinary civilian clothing.

The square beam of the nearest window falls on a figure in French Army uniform his open chest cavity of closest, corrupted and necrotic red – black flesh glistening with moisture like a night frost. Impossibly mobile, entirely dead yet somehow still advancing on your position.

There was still worse – something much further back in the depths of the fog almost shapeless but the size of a house and advancing behind the figures like the crest of a slowly cresting wave.

“Now!!” shouts Slade, bowling the grenade over the top of the sandbag wall without even a cursory glance to see what he was bowling at

Upstairs

The naked individual in the wardrobe slowly unfolds himself from the far corner and edges out it on all fours like a very wary crab exiting its shell
He looks up at you with huge vacant eyes, a half smile still on his face.

Glancing over to see where the noise in the room is suddenly coming from the orderly crouched down and tending to his wounded comrade sees the emerging nakedness and topples over onto his backside.

“Jesus whept!” he shouts “for God’s sake man put some damned clothes on!”

“He is calling to me”
whines the naked man “and I must go or he will come for us and we will all leave with him. Look”

He points over to the broken window where the previous assailant had departed. Impossibly the thick fog outside is now pouring over the window ledge, a silent waterfall in miniature spreading its thick overspill across the floor.

He stares at the figures approaching. Zombies. He had said the word but hadn't really believed it. He is either dreaming or losing his mind. Bad enough being in a world war film.. now a horror movie. It is too much.

Then Slade shouts. His grenade is in hand. He is scared. He throws it, aiming for the legs of the guy at the front. How can you kill what is already dead? But without legs it won't move as quickly.. he hopes. Then he ducks down into shelter as it goes off.

He wants to go home.

Raising himself from behind the barrier after Nic's grenade exploded, he looked to see how if he could gauge the effectiveness of the blast. After doing so, he pulled the pin of his own grenade and threw it toward the largest group of uninjured... whatevers.

"Fire in the hole," he called out and ducked again.

He takes a step back from the naked, clearly unstable man. He can't help but listen then look as the fog starts into the room. At the same time, he hears shouts and sounds from below.

He has no idea what he should say to this man who is clearly mad. So he just says the first thing that comes to mind.

"Then go to him. Hurry. Leave now." she says urging the man to take the window of the stairs, he really doesn't care. The sooner he's gone though the better for all of them.

He takes another look out the window.

*Be safe friends. We need to all get home together from this insanity.*

The detonation of the first grenade puts to rest any form of explosion that the movies tries to glorify. Suppressed by the thickness of the air around it explodes with a loud crack than then a shockwave of near supersonic air that hits you right in the pit of your chest even behind the sandbag wall.

There is a guttural gargling scream from somewhere near the blast - a crown of rising mud and water scattering the figures nearest the explosion like matchwood, repeated again as Slade’s device detonates.

Summers third and final grenade lands with commendable accuracy at the front of the largest cluster of the incoming figures. The result is very much the same except this time a small body of what could only be a child of perhaps 10 years of age hurtles upwards from the epicentre of the detonation landing in a crumpled heap close to the boundary of the sandbag wall.

A cascade of foul smelling filth, mud and detritus rains down on everyone behind the sandbag wall. Something solid yet soft lands directly on Summer’s helmet and tumbles down landing on the ground next to him.

Upstairs

The naked figure moves quickly towards the window, the same wide eyed expression and vacant smile on his face. He stands with his back to the shattered frame.

“That is not dead which can eternal lie!” he snarls pointing at Morley "don't you understand!!!!!......"

Something else interrupts him, a huge utterly unnatural something that reaches tree trunk thick in through the window, coils around the figure like an octopus grappling its prey and then pulls him bodily backwards through the gaping void of the window in no more than a second.

In the briefest moments you catch sight of it or at least part of it - a green-grey shapeless assemblage of flesh adorned with protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light glisten on its surface

The explosions surprised him... the grenades were much more powerful than he expected and he glanced wide-eyed at the companion at his side.

"Did you uh..." but then whatever he was trying to say - he wasn't sure himself what it was - was cut off when he saw the small body catapult into the air.

But then, before he could react, something his helmet and fell to the ground at his feet and he lunged backwards to escape whatever it was.

"What the..."

He too is stunned at the force of the explosions and shares a look of surprise with Phil. However he is still really paranoid as to what effect they had on stopping the zombies... and so her risks a tentative look over the barrier.

He had no response for the man. He really didn't care if he jumped to his death or ran madly into the night. His words made no sense and he was about to say "No. I do not understand." but the words were choked off when the man was grabbed.

Morley stumbled backwards against the furthest wall from the window, tripping over the bed if it was in the way.

*What the hell was that?* he thought, wondering if he could have really seen what he thought he'd seen.

They needed to get out of there. Now!

[ooc: I keep reading this over and over. “That is not dead which can eternal lie!" Is that what you meant, I keep thinking there is a letter or pronoun or something missing.]
